Argentina: Unionized public workers plan to rally in front of Congress in Buenos Aires from 14:00 June 27 /update 1
Activists plan to protest in central Buenos Aires, Argentina, at 14:00 June 27 to denounce omnibus bill. Tight security, disruptions likely.
Activists affiliated with the Government Workers' Association (Asociacion de Trabajadores del Estado, ATE) have called for a national day of action June 27 to denounce the scheduled debate of the Omnibus Bill in the Chamber of Deputies. The main action will be a large demonstration in front of the National Congress at 14:00.
Tens of thousands of people will probably attend the demonstration in central Buenos Aires. Related gatherings are also likely in front of government buildings in cities across Argentina. Other activist groups may participate in the protests. Heightened security, as well as significant transport and business disruptions, are likely near demonstration sites. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.
Avoid all protests due to the possibility of clashes. If clashes occur nearby, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in downtown Buenos Aires June 27. Confirm government appointments in advance.
The Omnibus Bill, also known as the Framework Law (Ley de Bases), is one of the main projects of the Milei administration. It includes a large number of reforms to deregulate the country's economy, allowing the national government to privatize state-owned companies. It also declares a financial public emergency for one year, allowing the government to enforce a number of measures without legislative support. The Chamber of Deputies debated and voted down the bill in its original form in early 2024, but after a series of changes, approved it in late April. The Senate passed the bill June 12 after making some alterations. The Chamber of Deputies is scheduled to debate the amended bill June 27.
