Bangladesh: Bangladesh Nationalist Party to hold nationwide protests through early July

Bangladesh Nationalist Party to protest across Bangladesh through early July. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will protest nationwide through early July to demand the release of the party leader and former prime minister, Khaleda Zia, from house arrest. Organizers have announced the following plans:

  • June 29: In Dhaka, activists will gather outside the BNP headquarters in the Naya Paltan area at 15:00.

  • July 1: Demonstrators will stage rallies in all metropolitan cities.

  • July 3: Protesters will gather at all district headquarters or administrative centers in each district.

Additional rallies of varying types, including sit-ins and marches, are also likely on other days. Counterdemonstrations are possible. Potential gathering sites include political party offices, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will likely vary by locale, with well-attended gatherings drawing thousands of attendees. Organizers can cancel or delay any planned actions at short notice for several reasons, including restrictions from law enforcement.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor such gatherings and may use force to disperse unruly crowds. Clashes between activists and police and between members of opposing groups cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Avoid all demonstrations. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
