Suspected militants attacked a military detachment in Pendjari National Park, near the Tanguieta area of Atakora Department on June 4. The ambush left at least seven soldiers dead. Further details are unclear; authorities rarely comment on security incidents at the northern border area. As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Militant groups aligned with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State are likely responsible.

Despite a heightened military presence in northern Benin, particularly along the borders of the Atakora and Alibora departments, additional attacks remain possible in the near term.

Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in northern Benin. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.

Tanguieta is one of several townships in northern Benin that were placed under nightly curfews in March 2023 due to the deteriorating security situation. Other townships subject to the curfew are Banikoara, Karimama, Kerou, Segbana, Materi, and Cobly, as well as villages bordering W and Pendjari national parks, which form part of the larger W-Arly-Pendjari Complex. It is unclear whether the measure remains in force as of June 2024. Other measures may include a ban on gatherings and the use of select vehicles.
