Greece: Unionized civil servants to strike, protest in Athens June 20

Unionized civil servants to strike in Athens, Greece, June 20. Protest planned at Syntagma Square from 12:00. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Unionized civil servants associated with the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) plan to strike and protest in Athens on June 20. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce the planned liquidation of the General Mining and Metallurgical Company (LARCO), a state-owned mining organization. Participants will walk out from 11:00 through the end of the day. Additionally, a central protest is planned at Syntagma Square from 12:00. It was not immediately clear how many personnel may participate in the walkout and protest; however, ADEDY includes workers from many parts of the public sector, including education, medicine, and emergency responders.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Public service disruptions, including those in education and medical services, are likely. Educational disruptions could lead to increased employee absenteeism. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Syntagma Square. Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children on June 20; consider a liberal leave or telecommuting policy, where possible. Reconfirm planned appointments with medical and public administrative institutions. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
