Greece: Unionized health sector workers to protest in Athens, June 19

Unionized mental health sector workers plan to protest in central Athens, Greece, from 12:00 June 19; increased security likely.

Informational

Unionized mental health sector workers will demonstrate in Athens on June 19; participants aim to denounce the government's decision to close up to 75 addiction prevention centers nationwide. In support of the protest, a 3-hour work stoppage has been issued on June 19 between 12:00 and 15:00 for mental health workers in Attica; striking workers are likely to join the demonstrations. Several hundred to the low thousands of participants will likely attend. Demonstrators organized two major events in Athens:

  • Ministry of Health: Participants will demonstrate from 12:00

  • Syntagma Square: Participants will demonstrate from 17:30 to 22:00

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor both events; localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Violence is not anticipated.

Avoid the protest areas as a standard precaution. Heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
