Malawi: Vice-President confirmed killed in aircraft crash June 10 /update 1

Malawian officials locate remains of aircraft missing since June 10; ten people killed, including Vice-President.

Warning

Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has confirmed that the wreck of a military aircraft missing since early June 10 has been found. There were no survivors; Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima is among ten people killed in the accident. The wreckage is reportedly located in the dense forests of the Viphya Mountains, North of Mzuzu. The aircraft took off from Lilongwe at around 09:17 and failed to land at Mzuzu Airport (ZZU) at 10:02, as scheduled. The reason for the crash appears to be meteorological, as officials had told the plane not to attempt to land at ZZU due to poor weather and visibility.

Increased security is likely near the crash site in the coming days as authorities complete their investigation. Localized ground transport disruptions are possible in affected areas. Temporary flight disruptions are also possible at the country's airports, including Lilongwe's Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) and ZZU, amid the ongoing investigation.

Avoid all concentrations of security personnel. Allow additional time for travel. Prepare for possible flight disruptions at the country's airports. Carry identification documents at all times. If stopped by security forces, remain courteous and cooperative. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
