Mexico: Electricians union staging protest march in downtown Mexico City June 1

Unionized electricians marching in central Mexico City, Mexico, June 1. Tight security, localized transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Around 1,500 members of the Mexican Union of Electricians (Sindicato Mexicano de electricistas, SME) are staging a protest march in central Mexico City on June 1. The purpose of the action is to show support for the unionized teachers affiliated with the National Education Workers' Coordinating Organization (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Education, CNTE), who are currently on strike and have been protesting for improved salaries and working conditions. Protesters initially gathered at Palacio de Bellas Artes before marching to the Zocalo.

Although the action will probably remain largely peaceful, authorities will probably maintain an increased security presence near the march as a precaution. Transport and business disruptions are likely along the march route for the duration of the demonstration.

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the protest march and any related disruptions. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near the impacted area. Heed the instructions of authorities.
