Mexico: Unionized transport workers to stage strike and road blockades nationwide June 28

Transport workers to strike, block roads across Mexico from 08:00 June 28; transport disruptions, heightened security highly likely.

Warning

Transport workers affiliated with United Transport Workers (Transportistas Unidos) will strike and block roads across Mexico from 08:00 on June 28. The purpose of the action is to demand payment for producers of basaltic material used to construct the Tren Maya railway lane in the state of Quintana Roo. Organizers have indicated that at least 130 transport units intend to stage protests and blockades at several locations, including the following:

  • Amozoc Pubea Toll Booth: 30 cargo trailers

  • 7 Xul-Ha Bacalar, Quintana Roo: 20 cargo trailers

  • Tulum Airport, Quintana Roo (TQO): 10 cargo trailers

  • Entrance to Mexico City: an unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Mexico-Cuernavaca toll booth: unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Mexico-Queretaro Toll Booth: an unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Mexico-Puebla Toll Booth: unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Mexico-Pachuca Toll Booth: unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • La Antigua Booth entrance to Puerto Veracruz: unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Mérida-Cancun Booth, near Chichen Itza: an unspecified number of transport vehicles

  • Cancun Airport, Quintana Roo (CUN): an unspecified number of transport vehicles

Transport disruptions are likely along impacted routes; the protest activity and any associated transport disruptions may cause business and supply chain disruptions in some areas. Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heightened security presence to the sites of any protests that materialize. Clashes between police and protesters are possible if gatherings are overly disruptive or drivers ignore police requests to disperse.

Plan on disruptions to cargo shipments and transport on June 27. Consider contacting transport companies and shipping lines to reroute time-sensitive shipments. Allow additional time for road travel, especially on major highways, as demonstrations and consequent transport disruptions could materialize on short notice. Keep in touch with local contacts for updates on transport disruptions. Heed all directions from security personnel.
