Togo, Benin: Power outages likely nationwide through at least July 4

Power outages likely across Togo and Benin, including Lome and Porto-Novo, through at least July 4.

Warning

Power outages are likely across Togo and Benin, including Lome and Porto-Novo, through at least July 4. The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) announced that distribution facilities have experienced a decrease in natural gas availability due to a planned three-week maintenance repair project in neighboring Nigeria as of June 17. WAPCo officials state that the resumption of the supply of electricity will likely resume following the maintenance repair period. The availability of electricity may vary by region.

Transport and business disruptions are possible in areas experiencing power outages; malfunctioning traffic signals could disrupt the flow of traffic. Power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and fuel stations. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages. Protests in response to the outages could occur, especially if the outages are prologued. Power outages and consequent disruptions could extend beyond the estimated power restoration times.

Charge mobile and other electrical devices in advance and ensure backup batteries are available where needed. Plan for possible road travel delays due to malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas; exercise caution when driving in the impacted areas. Verify that security systems are working during the scheduled power outages. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel equipment where necessary. Identify business-critical functions that require a power supply.

The West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) initially began construction in 2005 and suffered numerous delays before fully transporting compressed gas on the pipeline in February 2011. Spanning 678 km (421 mi), WAGP originates from the Itoki Terminal in Lagos, Nigeria and spans across Togo, Benin before reaching the Takoradi and Tema Terminals in Ghana.
