Police operation ongoing in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 9. Ground transport disruptions possible.
Authorities are conducting a security operation in the Complexo da Mare area in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro early on July 9. The operation is mostly affecting the Parque Uniao and Nova Holanda areas of Complexo da Mare; armed clashes have been reported. Authorities have not reported any casualties or arrests at this time. Schools in the area are likely to postpone or cancel activities early on July 9.
Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected areas through at least late July 9. Transport disruptions, including along Avenida Brasil or the Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha), which leads to Rio de Janeiro/Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), cannot be ruled out. Suspects may set up barricades in the area to disrupt police operations.
