Greece: Activists and hospitality workers to protest in Athens July 12

Student activists and hospitality workers will protest in central Athens, Greece, on July 12; increased security likely.

Informational

Student activist groups and hospitality workers are planning two different protests in central Athens on July 12.

  • Propylaea: Students and unionized university personnel will denounce the National and Kapodistrian University's policy on union activity. The action occurs in response to the recent dismissal of an employee due to his activity in university unions. Several hundred people are likely to attend the event. The event starts at 12:00.

  • Stadiou Street, Athens: Unionized hospitality workers plan to protest to demand better working and salary conditions. The protest, led by the Union of Employees in Hotels, Food, and Tourism of the Province of Attica, will occur during a four-hour strike in Athens on July 12 from 12:00-16:00. Several hundred to the low thousand people are likely to participate. The protest starts at 13:30.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the gatherings. Localized road travel and transport disruptions are likely through July 12 near the protest sites. Disruptions at hospitality services through the afternoon of July 12 are possible. Violence is not anticipated.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time for travel near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
