Uganda: Further anti-government protests possible nationwide, particularly in Kampala, into late August /update 2
Anti-government activists may call for additional protests nationwide, particularly in Kampala, into late August. Clashes likely.
Anti-government activists may continue to call for additional protests into at least late August. Between July 23 and 31, protesters gathered several times in Kampala despite a protest ban and attempted to march towards the parliament. Security forces dispersed several gatherings and arrested dozens of people. There have been no major disruptions or damages due to vandalism during the demonstrations. Protest actions saw little participation overall.
In the event of further protests, likely gathering locations in Kampala include government buildings like the parliament. Similar gatherings across the country will likely take place in city centers or along the main axis. Protests are more likely every Tuesday and Thursday, with the possibility of demonstrations on other days as well.
Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes with security forces are likely, as security forces will likely disperse any gathering that materializes.
Avoid all protests. Plan for extra travel time near protest sites, particularly in Kampala. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks set up by protesters. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed instructions from authorities.
Protest calls initially emerged on social over allegations of corruption involving public officials, including the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, who is under sanctions imposed by the US and UK. Recent nationwide anti-government protests in Kenya have likely emboldened the protest calls.
