Argentina: University workers launch 48-hour strike Aug. 20

University workers launch 48-hour strike across Argentina on Aug. 20; associated demonstrations likely.

Informational

Unionized university workers affiliated with several organizations, such as the National University Trade Union Front (Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales), launched a 48-hour strike across Argentina on Aug. 20. Participants will make several labor-related demands, including a salary increase. In Buenos Aires, education workers affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires Educators' Union (Asociacion Gremial Docente de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, UBA AGB) plan to continue to strike through Aug. 22.

While organizers have not confirmed the locations and times for any gatherings, protests outside the universities and government buildings are likely, especially in Buenos Aires. While such protests are likely to be peaceful, they will probably cause localized transport disruptions, and police will likely deploy to monitor them.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow for additional travel time near protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
