Bangladesh, India: Increased security, disruptions likely along border regions through at least mid-August /update 2

Tight security, disruptions likely along India-Bangladesh border through at least mid-August amid unrest in Bangladesh. Exercise caution.

Warning

Indian officials are very likely to continue maintaining a heightened security posture near its border areas with Bangladesh through at least mid-August amid violent unrest in the neighboring country. As of Aug. 7, officials have announced various indefinite restrictions in the following states:

  • Manipur: A daily curfew is reportedly in effect in Jiribam 15:00-09:00 and Pherzawl 16:00-08:00.

  • Meghalaya: A nightly curfew is effective in parts of Meghalaya State, including East Khasi Hills District, 18:00-06:00.

  • Mizoram: The movement of goods and people is restricted within 3 km (2 miles) of the Bangladeshi border with Lawngtlai District.

  • West Bengal: Residents are restricted from traveling to the border areas during nighttime. Additionally, various cross-border bus and rail services are suspended.

Additionally, the government has increased its security presence along several neighboring land borders with Bangladesh. Depending on operational needs, officials are likely to extend their ongoing measures and expand these restrictions to encompass additional areas. Further restrictions, including telecommunications curbs, are possible if the perceived threats escalate.

Related protests are possible and could occur near government buildings, transportation hubs, public squares, and thoroughfares. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Associated transport and business disruptions, including supply chain and shipping issues, are highly likely to persist.

Exercise increased caution in the affected areas. Plan accordingly for cross-border travel and trade disruptions in the cross-border regions. Avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
