Brazil: Agricultural activists to protest in Porto Alegre Aug. 8
Agricultural activists plan to demonstrate in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, Aug. 8. Traffic disruptions likely.
Agricultural workers and activists affiliated with several organizations, including the Rural Union of Barra do Ribeiro (Sindicato Rural de Barra do Ribeiro), plan to stage protests in Porto Alegre on Aug. 8 to demand additional assistance from the federal government after severe floods in the region significantly affected the agricultural sector. Participants are gathering at Parque Maurício Sirotski Sobrinho, also known as Parque Harmonia, and will march to the Ministry of Agriculture in Porto Alegre from 15:00. Groups of demonstrators will also drive tractors along the march route, which is likely to cause significant disruptions to traffic. Officials will close Avenida Edvaldo Pereira Paiva for the demonstrations. Participation numbers remain unclear.
Disruptions along key roads in and around Porto Alegre are likely, and protesters may gather in other locations throughout the city. Authorities will deploy to monitor the gatherings, and skirmishes may occur.
Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in Porto Alegre through the afternoon of Aug. 8. Heed instructions from authorities.
