Brazil: Unionized bus workers continue strike in Recife on Aug. 13 /update 1

Bus workers affiliated with the Recife and Metropolitan Region Bus Drivers' Union (Sindicato dos Rodoviarios do Recife e Regiao Metropolitana) in Recife, Pernambuco State, are continuing to strike as of Aug. 13. The workers began their action on Aug. 12 to make several labor-related demands. Disruptions to several bus services have been reported. There is no indication of how long the action will last, but a meeting for negotiations is scheduled for Aug. 13 and could result in an agreement.

Related protests are possible, though none have been confirmed as yet. In addition to the direct impact on public transport in Recife, the walkout is likely to result in increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis, app-based ride-sharing, and metro services.
