Greece: Activists to demonstrate in Chania Aug. 30-Sept. 1

Activists in Crete will hold various demonstrations in Chania from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 to demand justice and denounce the officer-involved death of Kostas Manioudakis, who died while in police custody during a traffic stop. Organizers have announced events at three locations in Chania, though additional demonstrations are possible elsewhere in Crete. The specific demonstrations in Chania are:

• Aug. 30: Gathering and press conference at Park of Peace and Friendship of Peoples starting at 19:00

• Aug. 31: March from 1866 Square to an undisclosed location starting at 18:00

• Sept. 1: Memorial ceremony at Armeni Village starting at 09:30, followed by a gathering near the site of Kostas’ death on Fre-Vrysso provincial road near Vyreses

Authorities will likely deploy additional police to the demonstration sites as a standard precaution. Localized transport disruptions are possible. Clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if demonstrators ignore authorities’ orders to disperse.
