Somalia: Officials confirm at least five fatalities from bombing in the Garasbaley area of Mogadishu Aug. 21; second attack reportedly thwarted /update 1

Authorities are responding to two suspected car bomb explosions on the outskirts of Mogadishu the morning of Aug. 21. The first attack occurred along the Afgoye-Mogadishu Road in the Garasbaley area, resulting in at least five fatalities. Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack. Military officials said a second car bomb was intercepted and destroyed in the Elasha Biyaha settlement. No casualties were immediately reported from the incident.

Officials will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in the affected as they continue their response and investigations. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable.
