Uganda: Emergency response continues in Kampala Aug. 11 following collapse of waste pile /update 1
Officials confirm at least 12 fatalities as of Aug. 11 following the collapse of the Kiteezi Landfill in Kampala, Uganda. Response ongoing.
Officials confirmed Aug. 11 that at least 12 people died and 14 have been rescued following the collapse of a large pile of waste at the Kiteezi Landfill in northern Kampala. Recent heavy rains cause part of the landfill to break off early Aug. 10, covering multiple houses in the area. Response operations are ongoing, and an unconfirmed number of people may still be trapped in the rubble.
Emergency services will almost certainly remain on-site through Aug. 11. Disruptions to road travel in the area are likely. Officials could close nearby road routes. Demonstrations in response to the incident are possible by residents. Any protests are likely to be monitored and potentially dispersed by police.
Avoid the affected area until the emergency response concludes. Persons in the area should heed the directives of security forces. Avoid all public gatherings. If protests develop, consider leaving the area.
