Ukraine: Authorities implement emergency power outages in multiple areas following major airstrikes Aug. 26
Officials implement power shutdowns in multiple areas in Ukraine Aug. 26 following major airstrikes; business, transport disruptions likely.
Ukrainian energy provider Ukrenergo implemented emergency power outages in at least 15 regions following Russian aerial strikes targeting Ukraine on Aug. 26. Airstrikes reportedly damaged energy infrastructure facilities across Ukraine including in Poltava, Lutsk, Zhytomyr, and Zaporizhzhia; authorities in Kyiv deployed emergency measures, including "Points of Invincibility," functional locations provided with food, water, electricity, and mobile communication. Further regions will likely adopt the measure through Aug. 26. Disruptions are expected through at least late Aug. 26; however, authorities are unable to confirm when all emergency power outages will be suspended. While emergency power outages are implemented, scheduled shutdowns are not in place.
Transport, business, and telecommunications disruptions will likely affect areas subject to power outages. Malfunctioning traffic signals may disrupt traffic flow in some areas and lead to longer driving times. The electricity disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services in affected areas, such as hospitals, ATMs, and petrol stations. Additionally, power disruptions could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during the blackouts.
Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Exercise caution when driving in areas that are experiencing electricity disruptions. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary.
