Argentina: University workers plan 48-hour nationwide strike and protests in Buenos Aires Sept. 11-12
Unionized university workers to launch 48-hour nationwide strike in Argentina, Sept. 11-12, and hold protests in Buenos Aires.
Unionized university workers affiliated with several organizations, including the Argentine Federation of National University Workers (Federacion Argentina de los Trabajadores de las Universidades Nacionales, FATUN), plan to launch a 48-hour nationwide strike in Argentina on Sept. 11-12. The purpose of the labor action is to demand higher salaries and larger investment in public universities. The strike will likely prompt the cancelation of classes and activities at public universities nationwide Sept. 11-12. Additionally, activists plan to stage two demonstrations outside the National Congress in Buenos Aires at 13:00 on Sept. 11 to support retirees, and also at 13:00 on Sept. 12 to demand the approval of a university financing bill. Protests in other cities are possible, especially near government buildings and on university campuses.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near protest sites. Isolated skirmishes between police and protesters are possible.
Avoid all protests as a precaution. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating near potential protest areas. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed instructions from authorities.
