Bangladesh: Student activists to stage nationwide protest marches Sept. 5 to commemorate one-month anniversary of ousting former prime minister

Student activists to hold marches across Bangladesh Sept. 5; main march from University of Dhaka to Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at 15:00.

Warning

Activists affiliated with the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement will lead a nationwide protest march campaign on Sept. 5. The action commemorates the one-month anniversary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ousting. As part of their planned action, activists will begin the main protest march near the Raju Memorial Sculpture at the University of Dhaka at 15:00. In Dhaka, demonstrators will march through several points, including Dhanmondi, New Market, and Farmgate, before gathering near the Central Shaheed Minar monument. Organizers did not immediately specify the assembly points for other march routes.

The Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement and additional groups could stage further demonstrations of varying types, including sit-ins. Counterdemonstrations could occur at short notice. Potential rally sites include political party offices, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings could draw tens of thousands of attendees.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such demonstrations and could use force, including baton charges and live ammunition, to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Depending on operational needs, officials could implement enhanced restrictions, including road blockades. Clashes between police and activists and between members of opposing groups cannot be ruled out. Isolated security incidents, such as arson and vandalism, are possible. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
