Brazil: Events planned nationwide for Independence Day Sept. 7
Events and demonstrations planned across Brazil on Independence Day Sept. 7. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
Events are planned across Brazil to celebrate the 202nd anniversary of the country's independence on Sept. 7. Heightened security will be implemented for a parade that is scheduled to take place in Brasilia from 08:45 around the Monumental Axis Avenue and Praca dos Tres Poderes area. Parades and commemorative events organized by local authorities typically occur nationwide, especially in large cities and state capitals. Some of the confirmed events will take place at the following locations:
Sao Paulo: Anhembi Sambadrome from 09:00
Curitiba: Centro Civico area from 09:00
Recife: Imbiribeira area from 07:20
Salvador: Largo do Campo Grande
Members of the Liberal Party (Partido Liberal, PL) are also planning a Sept. 7 demonstration to oppose recent Supreme Federal Court rulings. Participants will gather along Avenida Paulista from 14:00, and heightened security measures will be implemented. Other anti-government demonstrations are scheduled in other cities, including in Rio de Janeiro along Avenida Atlantica from 09:00 and in Belo Horizonte at Praca da Liberdade from 10:00.
Increased security is likely nationwide. Authorities will almost certainly heighten security measures for events and demonstrations. Due to checkpoints, road closures, and other security precautions, transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of Independence Day events. While gatherings are likely to remain peaceful, clashes between opposing groups or between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Avoid all major gatherings as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Allow extra time for travel near Independence Day celebration sites and in downtown areas of major cities.
