Groups supporting New Caledonia's independence to demonstrate in Paris and across France, Sept. 24. Localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Groups supporting New Caledonia's independence plan to demonstrate in Paris and other centers Sept. 24. Activists will mark the anniversary of France annexing the Pacific territory in 1853. Protestors will gather in the following locations:

  • Paris: Place de la Nation, from 17:30

  • Bordeaux: Place de la Victoire, from 17:30

  • Lyon: Place Guichard, from 18:30

  • Marseille: Vieux-Port, from 18:30

  • Montpellier: Place Comedie, from 18:30

  • Rennes: Place de la Mairie, from 18:00

  • Strasbourg: Place Kleber, from 18:00.

It is possible that several hundred will attend the larger events. Further smaller demonstrations are possible across France.

Heightened tension between protesters and police is possible. In recent months, political activists prompted a wave of violent disorder in New Caledonia; French authorities deployed increased security measures to the territory.

Authorities will likely deploy heightened security measures near the demonstration venues. Road closures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
