Police have closed roads in downtown Athens on Sept. 10 as they attempt to subdue a knife-wielding individual threatening to detonate a gas cylinder. The individual is on the sixth-floor balcony of a residential building on Acharnon Street, immediately north of the city center. Authorities have evacuated the building and neighboring buildings, including the Ministry of Agricultural Development. No injuries have been reported. Firefighters and a police negotiator are also on site.

Traffic congestion is likely on surrounding roads. Heightened security and localized disruptions will likely persist until after the individual is subdued.

Avoid the area until police give the all-clear. Allow extra time for travel in the affected area of Athens through at least the early aftenoon of Sept. 10. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel.
