Authorities will almost certainly maintain an enhanced security posture in Nawada, Bihar State, into late September after a series targeted attacks related to a land dispute. On late Sept. 18, unidentified assailants burned down at least 80 residences and reportedly opened fire on members of the Mahadalit community in the Dedaur neighborhood on the towns northern outskirts. The Mahadalit are an historically marginalized group in India, consisting of the poorest of the Dalit caste. Authorities have as yet released no further details concerning the nature of the incident or any associated casualties.
The government could implement enhanced restrictions, including curfew orders, depending on public safety needs. Authorities could also expand such restrictions to encompass additional regions, if significant violence occurs. Related protests and clashes between various communities or between activists and police cannot be ruled out over the short term. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Further isolated security incidents are possible.
