Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin claims responsibility for attacks in Bamako, Mali, on Sept. 17, following earlier gunfire and explosions.

Warning

Al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for attacks targeting the Faladje Gendarmerie School and the military facility at the Bamako-Senou Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO) in Bamako at around 05:30 on Sept. 17. Malian officials have earlier announced that the situation was under control following gunfire and explosions reported in different areas. Officials are restricting access to the airport; the duration of the restriction remains unclear. There have been reports of some flight disruptions at BKO, including diversions, during the attacks. The extent of the damages and casualties associated with the attacks remain unclear.

Officials will likely maintain an increased security posture across the capital, particularly near the attack sites, government buildings, transport hubs, major routes, and foreign diplomatic offices. Further attacks cannot be ruled out. Security operations and related measures such as checkpoints and vehicle checks, may cause localized transport disruptions.

Reconfirm the status of roads before travel, including to BKO. Heed the instructions of local authorities; remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations while operating in the country.
