Increased security measures almost certain across Bamako, Mali, over the coming days following Al-Qaeda-linked terror attack Sept. 17.
Heightened security in Bamako is expected in the coming days following an Al-Qaeda-linked attack on Sept. 17. The assault targeted the Faladje Gendarmerie School and Bamako-Senou Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO). Although authorities had lifted access restrictions to BKO from 16:00, the attackers briefly seized control of aviation facilities, causing damage and resulting in flight cancellations and diversions. At least eight security personnel are reported dead. Malian officials have declared the situation under control despite ongoing gunfire and explosions. The Al-Qaeda affiliate Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility.
Authorities may impose stricter security measures, including movement restrictions, vehicle checks, and curfews. Routes into and out of Bamako might see increased security, potentially causing localized transport disruptions. Clashes between security forces and attackers are possible, and pro-government demonstrations could occur. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.
