Security operations are ongoing in Bamako after gunfire and explosions occurred in multiple areas early Sept. 17. According to initial reports, explosions and gunfire broke out at the Faladje Gendarmerie School near the Tower of Africa at around 05:30. Security forces have cordoned off the area and are restricting movement near the site. Gunfire was also reported in the Senou area near Modibo Keita International Airport (BKO). It is unclear if access to the airport is being restricted. Malian officials announced that the situation is under control after terrorists attacked the gendarmerie school. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Casualties associated with the incident remain unconfirmed.

An increased security presence, along with business and transportation disruptions, are likely over the coming hours. Further clashes are possible.
