Netherlands: Climate activists associated with the Extinction Rebellion group plan roadblock protest in The Hague Sept. 14
Extinction Rebellion activists plan roadblock protest on A12 motorway in The Hague, Netherlands, Sept. 14; disruptions likely.
The environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plans to stage a roadblock protest on the A12 motorway in The Hague starting at 12:00 Sept. 14. The purpose of the action is to demand an end to fossil fuel subsidies. Organizers have not announced exactly where on the A12 the protest will occur; however, previous gatherings have targeted the Utrechtsebaan, the section of the A12 adjacent to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. XR protesters have staged multiple demonstrations at this location in recent months, including July 2, when police detained several activists. Based on previous events, several hundred people will likely participate in the demonstration.
The event may become more disruptive than has typically been the case in the past as law enforcement officers may not be present. In an effort to press a demand for improved retirement benefits, unionized police are refusing to provide additional security for the XR gathering.
Transport disruptions are likely on the A12 for the duration of the protest. The demonstration could have a higher potential for clashes or other security incidents should city police officers make good on their threat not to deploy to the area. Separate protest actions are possible throughout the city, including targeting fossil fuel-related businesses.
Avoid any demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions before beginning journeys in The Hague on Sept. 14; allow extra time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas. Leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation.
