Argentina: Unionized university workers holding nationwide 48-hour strike Oct. 21-22; protests planned Oct. 23 /update 1

Unionized university workers are staging a 48-hour strike across Argentina Oct. 21-22 with protests planned for Oct. 23.

Warning

University workers affiliated with the National Universities Union Front (Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales) are holding a 48-hour strike across Argentina on Oct. 21-22. The purpose of the labor action, which follows a similar strike on Oct. 17, is to denounce a recent presidential veto of legislation that would increase funding for public universities. Related student-led demonstrations have materialized at various universities, including sit-ins and closures at campuses.

Additionally, activists will stage a rally outside the National Congress in Buenos Aires starting at 12:00 Oct. 23. Other rallies and demonstrations are also likely, especially near public universities in major cities. Heightened security and disruptions to transport, business, and university operations will probably affect campuses and nearby areas. Road closures are also likely near locations where protests take place. Counterdemonstrations may materialize on short notice. Acts of vandalism, as well as clashes between demonstrators and police, or among activists from opposing camps, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the vicinities of university campuses. If operating near protest areas, prepare for transport and business disruptions and allow extra time for travel. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
