Major security operation likely after police ambushed in armed attack near Qaqachaka, Oruro Department, Bolivia, Oct. 23.
A major security operation is likely in parts of Oruro Department following an armed attack on a police convoy that occurred near Qaqachaka the morning of Oct. 23. According to officials, the officers were ambushed as they were traveling to a roadblock that had been set up on the Potosi-Oruro Highway; initial reports suggest that the attackers may have fired rifles from a hill overlooking the roadway. There were reportedly no casualties in the attack, though police vehicles were heavily damaged in the gunfire.
Further deployments of police to investigate the scene and attempt to apprehend suspects may cause additional transport disruptions. During such operations, clashes between police and demonstrators who have been taking part in protests nearby are also possible.
Strictly heed the orders of security personnel. Consider delaying travel through the area until any police operation has finished and roadblocks in the area are lifted. Do not attempt to drive through any remaining roadblocks; wait for police to clear them instead.
