Heightened security likely in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into at least Oct. 24 due to potential for sports match-related violence.
Authorities will likely maintain an elevated security posture in parts of Rio de Janeiro through at least early Oct. 24 due to the potential for sports-related violence as the city hosts the Copa Libertadores semifinal. Police clashed with fans of visiting team Penarol from Uruguay in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes area of of the city on Oct. 23, detaining around 200 people. A bus in the area was burned and some businesses were vandalized during the violence; confrontations between fans of the visiting and home teams also occurred. Disruptions may continue in the area through at least late Oct. 23.
Additional security and road closures are also likely near the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium, where the match will be played. Further clashes between police and unruly fans, as well as among supporters of rival teams cannot be ruled out.
Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Leave the affected areas if violence breaks out. Consider alternative driving routes to avoid potential trouble spots in Rio de Janeiro through Oct. 24; allow extra time to reach destinations.
