Warning

Authorities are conducting a security operation in the Cidade Alta, Pica-Pau e Cinco Bocas in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 24. Armed clashes with security forces are reportedly ongoing. Reports suggest traffic disruptions along Avenida Brasil, and the Penha Circular, Bras de Pina, Cordovil, Parada de Lucas, and Vigario Geral train stations are closed. Unconfirmed reports suggest that a bus on Avenida Brasil has been hit by bullets. Officials have not confirmed any casualties at this time.

Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected area in the coming hours. Transport disruptions along main thoroughfares of Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone, including along the Red Line Expressway (Linha Vermelha), which leads to Rio de Janeiro/Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), cannot be ruled out.

Strictly heed instructions from authorities. Avoid traveling to or through the affected areas of Rio de Janeiro. If within or near the affected areas, remain in accommodations until police give the all-clear.
