Greece: Activists to demonstrate in Thessaloniki Oct. 13

Political activists to hold multiple demonstrations in Thessaloniki, Greece, Oct. 13. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Activists affiliated with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) plan to conduct several demonstrations throughout Thessaloniki on Oct. 13. The purpose of the gatherings is to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Axis occupation of Greece. Large crowds may participate in the gatherings. The following demonstrations are planned:

  • 10:00: March starting at the intersection of Megas Alexandros and Marias Kallas.

  • 11:00: Demonstration at Nikos Papazoglou Park.

  • 17:00: March from Arch of Galerius (Kamara) through the city center.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstrations. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any gatherings or marches. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
