Greece: Several protests to occur across Athens Oct. 12

Two unrelated protests to occur at Propylaea and Victoria Square, Athens, Oct. 12; increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Two unrelated protests will occur in central Athens on Oct. 12. More than a thousand people are likely to participate in each of the following events:

  • Victoria Square: Participants will gather from 14:30 to denounce the death of an immigrant while in custody of the police. Demonstrators will later stage a march towards the Agios Panteleimon Police Station on Michail Voda Street.

  • Propylaea Square: Activists will gather from 19:00 to denounce Greece's involvement in foreign military operations with NATO.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security across Athens for the duration of both demonstrations. Road travel and transport disruptions are likely. Clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in central Athens on Oct. 12. Heed instruction from local authorities. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation.
