Greece: Unionized maritime workers extend ongoing nationwide strike to at least Oct. 25 /update 1

Unionized maritime workers extend ongoing strike with 48 hours in Greece, Oct. 24-25; maritime disruptions likely. Protests possible.

Informational

Maritime workers affiliated with multiple unions, including the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) and the Panhellenic Union of Deckhands (PENEN), extended an ongoing strike by 48 hours to end Oct. 25; the strike started on Oct. 22. Unions are demanding improved collective labor agreements for 2025. Multiple categories of maritime workers are participating in the strike, including deckhands, dock workers, and ferry workers. Ferry services across Greece have been reportedly halted through at least Oct. 25. Services will likely resume following the end of the strike. Further extensions of the ongoing industrial action are possible.

Ferry services will continue to be disrupted by the ongoing industrial action; these services may be suspended in some ports. Residual ferry and port service disruptions are possible even after the strike ends. Authorities will likely increase security near potential protest venues as a precaution, including near major ports, public squares, union buildings, and government buildings.

Confirm maritime travel, shipments, and port-handling operations scheduled until at least Oct. 25. Allow additional time to route freight through Greek ports during and immediately after the strike. Consider alternative shipping methods for critical freight. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate possible disruption. Heed instructions from authorities.
