Greece: Unionized maritime workers plan 48-hour nationwide strike Oct. 22-23

Unionized maritime workers plan 48-hour nationwide strike in Greece, Oct. 22-23; maritime disruptions likely. Protests possible.

Informational

Maritime workers affiliated with multiple unions, including the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO) and the Panhellenic Union of Deckhands (PENEN), plan to observe a 48-hour nationwide strike Oct. 22-23. Unions are demanding improved collective labor agreements for 2025. Multiple categories of maritime workers will participate in the strike, including deckhands, dock workers, and ferry workers.

Container terminal services, commercial port services, and ferry services will likely be disrupted by the industrial action; these services may be suspended in some ports. Residual ferry and port service disruptions are possible even after the strike ends. Authorities will likely increase security near potential protest venues as a precaution, including near major ports, public squares, union buildings, and government buildings.

Confirm maritime travel, shipments, and port-handling operations scheduled Oct. 22-23. Allow additional time to route freight through Greek ports during and immediately after the strike. Consider alternative shipping methods for critical freight. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate possible disruption. Heed instructions from authorities.
