Mexico: Activists mark Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968 by marching in multiple cities Oct. 2 /update 1

Activist groups march in multiple cities across Mexico, Oct. 2, to mark anniversary of Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968.

Warning

Several activist groups plan to stage marches in multiple cities across Mexico on Oct. 2 to commemorate the Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968, when Mexican soldiers opened fire on student protesters in the nation's capital, killing as many as 300 people. The marches in Mexico City and Guadalajara will likely attract the highest participation. In Mexico City, participants will gather at Plaza de Tres Culturas from 16:00 before marching to the Zocalo (Plaza de la Constitucion). In Guadalajara, demonstrators will assemble at the Rector of the University of Guadalajara from 16:00 before marching to the Lunar Planetarium.

Organizers have also announced plans for the following events:

  • Morelia: Lazaro Cardenas Monument from 15:00; Ciudad Universitaria from 16:00

  • Oaxaca City: March from the Technological Institute of Oaxaca to the Zocalo starting at 16:00

  • Tuxtla Gutierrez: March from Parque de la Juventud to the Government Palace starting at 16:00

Related demonstrations are also likely in locations elsewhere across Mexico. As a precaution, authorities will probably maintain an increased police presence near such gatherings. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely for the duration of the events.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near the impacted areas. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
