Netherlands: Unionized rail personnel plan series of labor strikes nationwide Nov. 11-22
Unionized rail staff plan labor strikes on several rail lines across the Netherlands Nov. 11-22. Transport disruptions likely.
Unionized ProRail personnel affiliated with the FNV union are planning to hold several strikes across the country from Nov. 11-22. The purpose of the strikes is to demand higher wages. Work stoppages will be held at rail traffic control posts on the following rail lines:
Nov. 11: De Kijfhoek marshalling yards, 11:00-16:00
Nov. 13: Amsterdam-Alkmaar line, 06:00-09:00
Nov. 15: Utrecht-Amersfoort line, 06:00-09:00
Nov. 18: Rotterdam-The Hague-Roosendaal line, 06:00-09:00
Nov. 20: Eindhoven-Maastricht line, 06:00-09:00
Nov. 22: Zwolle-Groningen-Arnhem line, 06:00-09:00
The strikes will likely disrupt and possibly halt passenger and freight rail services on the affected rail lines. Lingering disruptions are possible in the hours following the work stoppages. As the strikes take place during peak traffic hours, increased congestion is likely on available rail services and other forms of transportation during the labor action. Heightened demand for alternative modes of transportation may also result in reduced taxi or bus availability. The strike action could be extended or reduced at short notice. Protests are possible at the traffic control posts; a heightened security presence is likely near any demonstrations that materialize.
Check service schedules prior to travel if traveling via rail throughout the Netherlands Nov. 11-22. Consider alternative transport options, if necessary. Allow additional time for travel to account for possible congestion on alternative modes of transport. Avoid any demonstrations as a standard precaution. Heed instructions from authorities.
