China: Increased security ongoing in Macau through Dec. 20 amid presidential visit
Increased security measures ongoing in Macau, China, through Dec. 20 amid presidential visit. Localized disruptions likely.
Authorities are imposing heightened security measures and traffic restrictions in Macau for President Xi Jinping's visit through Dec. 20. President Xi is visiting the territory to mark the 25th anniversary of Macau's return to Chinese sovereignty. Security will be especially tight around key event locations, such as the East Asian Games Dome and Golden Lotus Square, where a flag-raising ceremony will occur.
Light Rapid Transit (LRT) services between Barra and Stadium stations are suspended, while train services between Pai Kok Station and Taipa Ferry Terminal are operating at a reduced frequency. Officials are increasing security checks at entry and exit points, including Macau International Airport (MFM), Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, which could cause congestion and delays in clearing customs and security screenings. Authorities have also imposed a temporary drone ban across the territory until Dec. 20.
Checkpoints and random security checks are likely, particularly on roads leading to event venues. Transport disruptions are probable near event venues, especially amid officials' arrival and departure. Associated business disruptions are possible.
If operating in Macau, consider avoiding affected areas unless attending related events. Allow additional time if traveling in the vicinity of event venues through Dec. 20. Carry proper identification documents. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
