Despite a heightened military presence in northern Benin, particularly along the borders of the Atakora and Alibori departments, additional attacks remain possible in the near term. Officials could impose measures such as localized curfews or a ban on gatherings.
Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in northern Benin. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
It is the deadliest attack recorded in recent years. There is an elevated militancy threat in parts of northern Atakora and Alibori departments bordering Burkina Faso and Niger, where groups affiliated with the Islamic State have previously claimed responsibility for attacks.
