Brazil: Police operation ongoing in Rio de Janeiro on Jan. 8

Authorities are conducting a security operation in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro early on Jan. 8. The operation is reportedly affecting the Manguinhos area, and officials have disrupted traffic along Rua Leopoldo Bulhoes near the affected area. Suspects have reportedly also set up barricades in the area to disrupt police operations. Armed clashes involving security forces and suspects have been reported. Authorities have not reported any casualties or arrests at this time. Public transport disruptions in and around the affected area are likely in the coming hours.

Heightened security and disruptions to business and traffic are likely in the affected areas. Transport disruptions, including along Avenida Brasil and Avenida Novo Rio, cannot be ruled out.
