Officials to implement increased security measures during presidential inauguration in Accra, Ghana, Jan. 7. Protests possible.

Informational

Officials will implement heightened security measures in parts of Accra during the inauguration of President-elect President John Dramani Mahama on Jan. 7. Authorities will enact road diversions and closures on select roads, including to and from Kotoka International Airport (ACC), as visiting dignitaries arrive and later depart. In the city center, security forces will also restrict vehicle and pedestrian movement in some areas, notably around the Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, where the ceremony is scheduled to occur. Large crowds are likely.

Traffic and business disruptions are likely in parts of Accra until the ceremony concludes and visiting dignitaries depart. Protests denouncing Mahama’s victory remain possible. Security forces will likely swiftly disperse such gatherings.

Avoid central areas in Accra on Jan. 7 to minimize disruptions. Confirm all transport arrangements and allow additional time to reach destinations, including to and from ACC. Avoid all protests and areas where security personnel appear to be deployed. If violence occurs, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building. Heed all instructions from local authorities.
