Ghana: Protesters burn tires, block roads in Abeka area of Accra Jan. 7

Protesters burn tires in Abeka, Accra, Ghana, Jan. 7 to denounce parliamentary election results; police and firefighters deploy to scene.

Warning

Dozens of protesters assembled in the Abeka area of Accra on Jan. 7, burning tires and blocking roads. The purpose of the demonstration was to denounce the Electoral Commission's declaration that New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Patrick Yaw Boamah defeated Baba Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party in the 2024 parliamentary election to represent the Okaikwei Central constituency. Police and firefighters reportedly deployed to the scene amid the protest.

Heightened security and lingering disruptions to transport and business will likely affect parts of the Abeka area over the short term. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible in the event of further protest activity, particularly if protesters ignore any orders from police officers to disperse.

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the scene of the protest and any lingering disruptions. Allow extra time for travel in the Abeka area of Accra. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
