Malaysia: Political parties to hold rally in Putrajaya Jan. 6 /update 1

Political parties plan to rally at Palace of Justice courthouse in Putrajaya 08:00 Jan. 6. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Authorities plan to bolster security around the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya due to likely gatherings during a court hearing for former Prime Minister Najib Razak, Jan. 6. The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has canceled protest plans after police warned that no such rally has received a permit and participants could face strict legal action. However, opposition parties Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), Perkasah, and Ummah are maintaining plans to hold a demonstration outside the courthouse from 08:00 Jan. 6 in support of the former politician; organizers claim over 5,000 people will attend the event, although attendance will likely be in the hundreds.

Security forces may move to disperse any demonstrations and use force or conduct mass arrests to control any crowds that defy official restrictions or attempt to breach security cordons. Increased security measures, such as traffic curbs, are likely at the Palace of Justice, as well as nearby government buildings and public squares. Authorities also plan to implement roadblocks at all entry points to Putrajaya and screen incoming commuters for weapons and protest signs; increased congestion is likely. Vehicle processions and street marches to the rally venue are possible, exacerbating transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid the protest. Do not attempt to pass any roadblocks. If clashes occur, immediately depart the area for a secure, nongovernment building. Confirm road status and transport reservations in the affected area through the evening of Jan. 6; allow additional travel time. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
