Uganda: Measles outbreak in Agago district
34 confirmed cases of measles in Agago district, Northern region
Event
On Monday, May 1, health officials declared a measles outbreak after there were 34 confirmed cases of rubella (also known as German measles or three-day measles) in Agago district (Northern region). All of the reported cases have been children; 17 have been discharged from the hospital while 17 others are still receiving treatment.
Context
Initial rubella symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and a rash that generally starts on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body. The rash often lasts one to three days. The disease can be spread through the air via particles emitted during coughs and sneezes (the measles virus can live for up to two hours in the air). The illness is potentially fatal. A vaccine is available for children over nine months of age.
Advice
Individuals are advised to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and, if presenting with any of the above symptoms, are encouraged to seek immediate medical attention. It is also advisable to call ahead to the health facility to inform them of a suspected measles case so the spread of the disease to other patients can be prevented.
