An Iranian soldier opened fire on his colleagues, killing four and wounding eight at a military base in Kahrizak near south Tehran on Sunday, August 6. The motive for the attack is unclear, however a spokesperson for the army claimed the man had a history of mental illness. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Context

Military service in Iran is compulsory for men between the ages of 19 to 24. Shootings at army bases have been frequently reported, and in July 2017 an Iranian serviceman shot three fellow soldiers dead at barracks in Abyek.
