Spain: Security operation reported near Barcelona August 21 /update 9

Police sources reported that an operation was ongoing in the Subirats area near Barcelona as of around 16:40 (local time) on Monday, August 21. According to local media sources, the suspected driver involved in the car ramming attack on August 17 in Barcelona may have been arrested. Police officials confirmed that one person was shot and killed by officers at approximately 17:05 (local time). According to the police, the suspect was wearing what appears to have been an explosive belt. Details are still emerging. Avoid the area.

Context

Two terrorist attacks were carried out in Catalonia last week, killing 15 people and wounding over a hundred. On Thursday, August 17, a van plowed through crowds in Las Ramblas. Around eight hours later, a car drove into pedestrians in the coastal resort town of Cambrils. The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility the attack in Barcelona.

The terrorist cell responsible for the attack is said to have been disbanded, with over a dozen individuals allegedly involved in the attack. As the investigation continues, initial police reports indicate that a Moroccan imam radicalized the group of young men. He is said to have been killed in an accidental explosion in a house in Alcanar on Wednesday, August 16. Authorities suspect that explosive devices were being prepared in the house for use in a larger attack.

Thursday's incidents come as Europe remains on high alert against the threat of terrorism following a series of high profile attacks across the continent in recent years.
