Spain: Barcelona El Prat airport strike suspended

Security personnel at Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN) announced on Tuesday, September 5, that future strikes will be postponed as dialogues resume concerning working conditions and pay increases. Earlier on Tuesday, September 5, workers from the private security company Eulen had postponed planned strikes to October 6 following negotiations with the government. Additional strikes may take place if talks between the union and the government fail.

Context

Security personnel at Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN) had been staging weekly strikes since August 4 on each Friday, Sunday, and Monday to protest their working conditions and to demand a pay increase. Although it had initially promised to postpone any general strikes until September 1, failed negotiations on August 10 led representatives to announce an indefinite all-out strike beginning on August 14. The strike was suspended on August 17 following the terrorist attack in Barcelona.

These strikes have caused long lines at security checkpoints and subsequent flight disruptions causing thousands of passengers to miss their flights.
